can I freeze a frame of an FCPX lower third template?

Depending on the title template you are using you may be able to turn off the build. Drop the title into the timeline and then look at it in the inspector. Under the “Title” tab if you have the options of “Build on” and “Build off” just uncheck those. That will stop the animation from happening.

And if you can’t, you can certainly sandwich it in between two duplicate video layers, and instead of fading in the graphic, simply fade out the top video layer. (past the build in point obviously).

Or, the partly less, partly more messy version: drag it out well beyond the actual length needed, make a compound of it (⌥G) and truncate as needed. Only then you’ll need a new compound for each version.

But the vast majority of FCP titles have a checkbox for disabling the builds as described above. The exceptions are few and far between, so you most likely won’t need more than that anyway.

I’ve done that for various fx or templates that have a build or a spot in the template that I don’t like or goes too slow/fast. Compound it and then you can slice and dice. AND you can apply speed ramps or freezes. There’s a bullet point plug-in that is super useful for creating what would be a motion project or 10 layers instead of a single one. I compound it so that I can insert holds so the bullets actually time with the text.

Hi everyone! Thank you for your help!
I am using Title: Lower Thirds: Documentary: Left.
This template does not seem to have an option to turn the build on and off. The biggest problem is that it only hits full brightness for about one frame before the build-down begins.
I am a complete neophyte in the ways of compound clips. I tried it and then I got a little scared because the whole timeline disappeared. Can anyone give me real slow dumb-dumb instructions here?

Then you probably selected EVERYTHING before compounding, which you of course shouldn’t do. You would want to—as I described before—drag out the title to an inordinate length and then right-click on ONLY the title and choose “New Compound Clip” or simply select it and hit ⌥G. That you could then truncate to just the parts you want to see.

BUT… you in fact have chosen the least suitable title for that, yes. Meaning the whole compound thing wouldn’t in fact be of any use with this one. The only thing you could in fact do is create A STILL of the frame you wanted from the compound and… never mind… that would be nonsense. No idea what the person who built it was thinking, but yeah, it’s only on screen for like a frame before disappearing. Pretty useless. It’s actually built very strangely and highly convoluted in general. Took me a lot more digging than I had thought to figure out what had been done, where and how… a mess.

To cut to the chase and get the job done without all the hick-hacking, I’ve simply made you a version with a build-in and out option (the way it should have been) that you can download here: https://bit.ly/1xjM8gV

Simply expand the folder and put it, as is, in the “Titles” folder that is in the “Motions Templates” folder in your “Movies” folder.

To be honest, I expected it to be far easier to “convert” than it actually was, which can be attributed to the bizarre and impractical decisions made in the original. It should have taken less than a minute, but it took at least ten. Or at least it felt that way. Lucky for you, after about 4-5 mins. I was so confused with the damn thing, that I just HAD to know what was going on and had to fix it! 😉
