can i edit with this external drive?
Posted by Milton Hockman on October 21, 2007 at 4:02 ami just bought a Maxtor Onetouch 4 External 500GB drive. It is 7200rpm. speed up to 480mb/sec, USB 2.0, Formatted HFS+.
I did a simple test of making the drive my scratch disk and imported a clip and render out to it and it played fine.
Just wondering if this drive is fine to edit off of and use? i was concerned if i needed to use a firewire drive or if USB 2.0 is fine nowadays.

October 21, 2007 at 4:10 amYou can use USB2 if you use low data rate codecs (DV, HDV..) but I would recommens you to go for FireWire HDs. The problem of the USB2 is that, although they can reach a transfer data rate similar to the FW400, they can not mantain that speed. In the moment you will pile more than one layer with clips that are in the same USB HD, your RT performances will go down.
I use a USB2 for my documents, family pictures, etc. But the footage in FWs.

this was already answered, yes it’s doable, but not really, if you have to do this, make sure your project file is on your computer it will help the speed, and dont touch anything better than, dv, or multiple streams.

this is a biiiig no no, if you HAVE to use this drive, don’t looks to use it for more than a few weeks, don’t fill her up beyond a few dozen gigs, and keep your media files over 2gigs. Your files WILL, not maybe, not sometimes they do, but WILL corrupt if they are too large, or you are calling on them a lot. use mac os extended (not journaled). i work in my colleges digital lab, and no matter how many times I say it, I see about a dozen unformatted or improperly formatted drive (especially fat 32) have issue after issue. In fact I check every time I help some one, just in case.
I hate to be so negative, but such is life. It’s a scary world, and keeping your drives formatted correctly is just one thing to keep your life a little bit happier.

October 22, 2007 at 2:40 pmYou can disable the journaling without need to reformat the HD. I think that you can do it with Onyx or Cocktail.

October 22, 2007 at 2:40 pmA.Zander, your advice to stick with Mac OS Extended is good, but I’m afraid you’ve confused the mr_gfx a bit.
HFS+ IS Mac OS Extended. It’s just 2 names for the same thing.

October 23, 2007 at 4:46 amTurning on journaling may be a slight speed hit, but I’d recommend leaving it on — especially if you’re only going to use it for DV, AIC, or HDV. I had a similar model Maxtor OneTouch drive (with FireWire), and I screwed up the drive directory twice when I unplugged it improperly. The automatic fsck fixed it both times, but it took a while, and was very annoying. Turning on journaling protected it, so fsck didn’t have to run each time I unplugged it improperly.
Journaling can easily be turned on and off in Disk Utility. I’d recommend trying it.
