  • Can I edit Uncompressed 8-bit/10-bit on my system?

I want to know if I can edit Uncompressed Quicktime off of my ExHD when I add 2GB of RAM to my computer. Or at least will I be able to color correct Uncompressed footage on my computer.

As long as your external HD is fast enough to handle Uncompressed…

Uncompressed what? HD? SD? And what type of drives are we talking about here?

Mr. Mech’s profile shows that he is editing with 320gb firewire 800 drives. That is good enough for DV, HDV, very limted 8-bit uncompressed, and even DVCProHD. But, firewire 800 is not adequate for editing uncompressed 10-bit SD.

Is eSata fast enough for Uncompressed 10-bit? Will my system run really slow if I’m color correcting in AE with FireWire 800?

You need at least a 2 drive eSATA Raid for uncompressed 10-bit…or internal SATA. CalDigit S2VR Duo is a great one….I use it lots. You can even use a 2 drive RAID FW800 for uncompressed 10-bit…like the G-Raid or Firewire VR. But a 2 drive eSATA would be the better bet.

G-Tech, Sonnet, Firmtek, MacGurus…all sell eSATA solutions as well.

    Hi Mench,
I edit 8/10b Unc with small external HDs Firewire 400 with out any problem in FC. In fact a bought a LaCie 320Gb Firewire 800 a couple of years ago but after that I went back to the smallers (200Gbs) Firewire 400.
For AE you can work even with slower HDs than with FC. AE take his time to render so it doesn’t need to be feed in real time.
