  • Can I deliver in this format?

Posted by Scott Clark on September 8, 2010 at 11:01 pm

I’ve seen this question posted in this forum at some point last year, but it got no responses, so perhaps someone can help this time around:

I need to export a music video (originally in 1920×1080) to these particular specs, and I want to know if I can do it in Vegas. I suspect it’s possible, as there is a preset that appears to come close, but I’m not all the way there yet:

    • Video on digital file must be in the NTSC (525) standard.
    • MPEG 2 @ 50Mbps, I-Frame, Program Stream, .MXF file
    • Essence Container: SMPTE D10 (Sony IMX 50)
    • Operational Pattern: OP1A
    • 4:2:2 @Main Level
    • 720 x 512
    • Frame rate: 29.97
    • Audio: PCM 24 bit @ 48Khz (4 discrete tracks: L, R , SAP, Descriptive)

Now, I see the preset under Sony MXF for “NTSC MPEG IMX 50 Widescreen” but the frame size does not give an option for 720×512… in my limited reading I have heard that when the PAR is changed during the downconversion process that frame size will take care of itself. Anybody know?

Additionally, I am unable to identify anything that indicates if the video from that preset is in fact OP1A, or whether the color space will be 4:2:2 (as the source material is), although intuitively I would think it would be. Also not sure what exactly I need to do for the SAP & Descriptive audio channels, but I’m less concerned about that.

Can anyone provide me with any insight into this issue?

    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hi,

this is only a partial answer, but still I hope it will help.
When I want to check the actual format to which a video is rendered, I use (free) tools like MediaInfo or GSpot, which provide me with a lot of details about the video.

Then you might want to render a small region of your movie to the settings you want, and then check the output with one of them.

    Hope this helps,
    Frédéric

The NTSC MPEG IMX 50 Widescreen setting in Vegas follows the NTSC 525 Standard of 525 scan lines of which 486 are visible. You’ll note that this preset is, in fact, 720×486 which means their requirement for 720×512 contradicts their requirement for NTSC 525. Operational Pattern 1A is what Sony XDCAM shoots so I would be surprised if Vegas’ Sony MXF format was anything but OP1A but I can’t confirm. MPEG2 is also a 4:2:2 format so I can’t imagine Sony IMX 50 not being 4:2:2. I realize that these are not definitive answers but I would render to Sony MXF using the NTSC MPEG IMX 50 Widescreen template and submit it and see if anyone complains. It will probably be fine.

    Thanks John,

As recommended in the earlier response I downloaded gspot and media info, and oddly enough (as I suggested I’d read in another thread), rendering out in that template (NTSC IMX 50 Widescreen) resulted in a height of 512, so it did sort itself out. The only issue I ran across was the extra audio channels, but everything else matched spec, so I went with it and hopefully it will work out fine.

    Thanks everyone for your help!

Let us know if it gets accepted (it should).

I too work with music videos (Daily).
I always have to export as Uncompressed AVI then encode in TMPGENC.
This is a pain and I feel the audio is still not perfect.

I need to export directly from Vegas MPG2 with PCM audio
