Apologies in advance. I’m probably going to be asking a lot of stupid questions. It’s my first day using Media Composer.

I need to delete the middle of an audio track because the director is saying ‘lights out’. In Final Cut, I could simply select the blade tool and delete the bit that I didn’t want. Can I do this in MC or do I have to keyframe the sound out?

Mark IN and OUT around the offending area, activate track, then do a LIFT. It will leave black (silence). You can also look for the “Add Edit” button which is the equivalent of the Blade tool in FCP.
