  • Can I create this effect/look with Fractal Noise in After Effects?

I love this scanned media look from the below reference:

I’ve tried to recreate it with Fractal Noise, but I can’t get that staggered effect in the grid – where it almost looks like random staircases.

Instead the closest thing I can get is random squares/rectangles popping around the screen when I keyframe random seed to time*12.

Other than manually designing every frame by creating shape layers, is there a way to simulate a similar look?

    Hey Damien,

That looks like a bad TV/VHS/DV filter/plug-in taken to the extreme.

But there are block wipes or similar that might create a similar effect.

Look at adding the mosaic effect on top of the fractal noise. That should give you some blocks. To get the length going on, try expanding the transform settings in Fractal Noise and unchecking uniform scale. The subscale settings influence might also help to get the staircase look.

    Hey Mads,

It’s mainly those block shapes that I’m struggling to create – without literally creating shape layers.

I’m going to dive back into this today and see how I go – I don’t want to exactly mimic this, it’s mroe of a reference, but I think the effect is so lovely.

    Hey Graham,

Thanks for your response – adding mosaic and unticking uniform scale is something I tried before posting this – I thought that it would work! But it just doesn’t get that staggered look…

Perhaps I need to try multiple instances of Mosaic + Fractal nose, it’s tricky. Main thing here is is really like this is a reference, so Im going to try and create something new off the back of it.
