  • Can I bring 1080i HD source into DVCPro HD codec using the kona LH?

I have a New G5 dual processor running FCP5 and Kona LH. I understand that many people are using sata drives and firewire 800 drives to edit the DVCProHD codec which is what I currently have. I have not purchased my HVX200 yet but plan to. Here is my question. I have a JVC DVHS deck with a sample 1080i DVHS tape. Can I come component out of the JVC into the Kona LH and capture it in the DVCProHd codec? Should I be able to play back one stream with the drives I have? What would my audio/video setting be?

I tried this last night and was able to get the HD signal to pass through to my monitor. However, when I tried to capture it, I could grab a few seconds but it would stop with a message about dropped frames. Also the few seconds I was able to capture would play back on the canvas but would not play out to production monitor. I am almost sure the kona capture setting was 1920 which I feel I did not want. The problem is when I selected other codecs to capture the footage, no signal would pass through. Any constructive comments would be appreciated. Is there an easy setup that would work?

You’ll not have any problems with the DVCPROHD codec with the Panasonic camera. Your drives are fast enough for a couple of streams maybe…

The LH can’t capture the HD signal you are sending it to anything but uncompressed HD, so that’s why you’re dropping frames. You need a lot faster setup for that. a Kona 3 with the drivers that are set to be released by the end of this month WILL do what you want, but the LH will only down convert to SD, not cross convert as you are attempting to do now. so don’t worry, buy the Panny and you’ll be good to go without needing faster drives… You’ll use the LH too to monitor, or down convert to SD…

I’ve done HD/DVCPRO 1080i50 Capture form HDCAM Tape via a Kona LHe, that works fine. However, here the format is identical in both playback and capture.

Since HD can be everything fr
