  • Can I back up a 16gb card to dual layer dvd?

Posted by Bret Hoekema on June 22, 2007 at 10:37 pm

We have a nice system going with the 8gb cards for backing up footage. We copy the cards to a drive through our pc laptop and then we eventually burn a dual layer dvd with all the p2 info. The question is this, is there a way to seperate the info on 16 gb cards to back up to dual layer dvd? If there is not it seems like we may just stick to 8gb cards

    Not easily, except by hand.

Since you mentioned that you are using PCs, you might look at Novastor backup software. It allows you to span discs on any backup session. It’s dreop dead reliable. I’ve used it with tape, disc, and DVDs for years.

Toast 8 has a DVD spanning capability that might work on a Mac.

Just got toast 8 so maybe I will try that. But I still think we may sell the 16gb card and stay with 8gb cards. That way there will be no fuss in backing up or reconnecting media to an old project.

I have had a lot of success using roxio creator 9 to break up material over multiple discs. I have a laptop with HD DVD and also records to regular DVD’s. I can take 50GB of info and throw it in to roxio and it will do all the work for me to break it up. It works as a good back up and archiving solution for now. I wouldn’t throw away the 16 Gb cards as I think they provide substantial advantage to record more material.

The only catch is if you go from a PC using roxio to a mac you need to tell it not to break up the data as macs will not be able to read the little attachment roxio put in the dvd’s in order to re-assemble the data. You loose a little space but roxio still breaks up the discs while preserving their integrity.

    hope it helps,

    Emre,

Thanks a lot. Just did a test run with Toast 8 on our mac and it worked out just fine…besides a couple disc burn errors. I will keep the advice for PC in mind. I noticed on the mac that it split one of the mxf files over the two discs and then reassembled it on restore.

Toast 8 worked well for us but since we have two hp’s with us on shoots does anybody know if Nero 7 burning rom will span discs? or will we have to get Roxio 9? I can’t find anything in Nero.
