  • Can Compound Clips be added to Event Library?

Posted by David Friedman on July 3, 2011 at 1:00 pm

The Event Library is technically able to hold compound clips. I know this because when FCP X synchronizes clips it creates a compound clip and puts it in the Event Library. But I can’t find a way to add my own compound clips to the event library.

I made a compound clip in the timeline, realized I don’t want it there anymore, but I don’t want to have to recreate it from scratch later if I do want it.

Anyone know if it’s possible to put it away for later reference? If not in the Event Library then some other way?

I don’t believe there is a way to move compound clips to the event viewer. Why not just dupe your project and work on the dupe? To me a project is simply what we used to call a sequence. Think of it in those terms and it’s just like duping sequences for different versions. Projects can be put into folder (by client or project name for instance) to keep them organized.

Working on a dupe doesn’t solve the issue because later when I want to use that compound clip I created in the original project, I can’t move it to the dupe project, as far as I can tell. I’m still stuck with the same issue.

    But I think I found a workaround.

First I create my own compound clip in the timeline. Then I have FCPX synchronize a couple of short clips, creating its own compound clip in the Event Browser. It doesn’t matter what clips I choose for it to sync, because then I replace the contents of that compound clip with the contents of my own compound clip using copy-paste. Now I can delete my compound clip from the timeline, but I have it in the event browser just like any other clip for when I need it.

    It’s clunky, but it works!

I was wondering if there was a way to do this, shame you can’t just save them to theEvent library, it’s going to be my first (of many) suggestions on the new FCPX feedback form

You can copy the compound clip from one project and paste it into another. No need for a workaround. I just double checked and it worked for me.

Great, I’m going to give it a try. Nice to now have a couple ways to work with compound clips.

What I do is just make a new empty Compound Clip in the Event and copy and paste all the clips from the Compound Clip in the timeline into that new one and put that new one (from the Event) in the timeline. And if it’s a Compound Clip I might want to use in a lot of timelines and get to quickly I’m trying to get in the habit of making it in the Event first.
