  • Can any of the wind modifiers make things tumble?

I’ve tried the wind in TP and the wind as a dynamics modifier. There are lots of examples of raw particles swirling around but few with objects showing if they rotate about each individual’s own axis due to the world turbulence noise map. (and I don’t mean tumble due to collisions)

In desparation I also tried useing a shader effector for mograph but that sets the initial rotation and not the orientation as the objects pass through the world mapped noise. (because that would probably do the trick). I don’t know why this didn’t work because using a displace deformer on a moving object works exactly this way.

In the manual, for the wind modifer, it says “Acceleration: The modifier twirls the objects around without taking their mass into consideration. Even ,heavy’ objects will behave like feathers.” Did they mean swirl instead of twirl perhaps?

    Any tips?

I should qualify that. I can get the wind modifier to tumble anything I want, except particle like things. I’m using mograph to hand out the position assignments to TP and emit from a plane. I tried putting the dynamics tag on the actual object to be cloned and it was fun to watch that one object shoot off tumbling like crazy while all the other instances just remained in their same orientation even though they were influenced positionally by the wind – just not rotationally.
I would have thought the wind node in TP would do this but not so far. Again the turbulence only seems to affect position.

How about using a Random effector set to turbulence or noise in global space? Use in combination with a particle wind effect? Turn up the Dynamics tag’s Aerodynamcs: drag and lift parameters for a more pronounced effect.
