No, FCP can render internally at 8, 10 och 32-bit precision to an 8/10-bit YUV och RGB codec. The higher depths make a huge difference on certain type of comps.

I thought I would chime in on this post. We have run one of our 10 drive FCR2X units on a Kona 3 running 4:4:4 at a customer site. When you stripe the two banks of 5 drives together you get a data rate of 300+ MB/Sec of raid 3 redundant storage.
