Camtasia & YouTube
Posted by Ken Fisher on August 25, 2012 at 4:54 pmSure hope I’m a “trusted member” now and don’t have to wait for moderation. What was my registered date? 2009? Anyhoots…
Been struggling with Camtasia, Vegas, and YouTube. Cam image quality looks bad.
Settings in Vegas are square pixels, NTSC DV (720×480, 29.970 fps), I’m just lost on why the final results are pixelated and poor focus? Has to have something to do with square pixels? I’ve tried Cam properties at 720 x 480 and lord knows what else. Lost at the moment.

That’s not a valid setting for square pixels. You must multiply the width by the pixel aspect ratio (PAR) to get square pixels. So 720×480 PAR 0.9091 is 655×480 in square pixels and 720×480 PAR 1.2121 (DV Widescreen) is 873×480 in square pixels.

What are the dimensions of the Camtasia files? If you are resizing them from a large computer screen down to SD they will always look bad. The rule of thumb is to record at the same resolution as you deliver or a multiple of 2x.

Try setting you Camtasia properties to one of the settings above and see if that helps.

August 25, 2012 at 8:45 pmHi John:
Thanks for the response. I saw a similar topic to this that your replied on but I scanned over it by confusing the topic with PAL and PAR thinking it didn’t apply to me. I’m using 1400 x 1050 for Camtasia so I can get most of the screen real estate without scrolling and panning and zooming.
So… 1400 x 1050 should be set to 700 x 525 in Camtasia and Vegas (square pixels)? It looks okay rendered on my PC. Waiting on YouTube

I’m interested in hearing how YouTube handles it because YouTube might not like the non-standard resolution. Keep us posted.

August 26, 2012 at 4:44 pmStill Struggling John:
I’m the type where it takes awhile to “get it.” After that no problem, providing I keep notes. Forget the other. I’m, going to 1280 x 720 where I’ll work with the scroll. I should just forget YouTube on this and go to Vimeo because I won’t be using Camtasia that often. Another thing is it’s all graphics and no actual video so why bother.
Here’s YouTube with square pixels. Still doesn’t look good. Another thing is the actual website is set to 960 pixels and not fluid.
1280 x 720 Camtasia
1280 x 720 Vegas settings
1280 x 720 render – square pixelshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mACWKUeTljI
I have actual video/film quality nailed with square pixels using standard def. thanks to the help here, but this one stumps me.
It doesn’t look bad in 16-9 ratio

Here is one of my videos on YouTube that was created with Camtasia 8. This was captured at 1280×720 30fps AVI by Camtasia, and edited in Vegas Pro 11.0 using the HDV 720-30p (1280×720, 29.970 fps) project setting and then rendered using MainConcept AVC with the Internet 720p template and uploaded to YouTube (press the button to watch it “On YouTube” in HD):

This is just to give you an idea of the quality you should expect.~jr

August 28, 2012 at 11:06 pmIt finally sunk in John. Spending a few days away from it did the trick.
