Would anyone know if there is a recommended workflow for Camtasia to Final Cut Pro 6? I currently have Camtasia 2, but I’m willing to upgrade if the process would work better with a recent version of the software. I have downloaded the EnSharpen codec for OSX and the Camtasia recorded video plays with QuickTime, but causes FCP to crash. I noticed in the Camtasia 5.1 documentation that the following phrase is used “Videos can also be edited and enhanced in Apple Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.” I can’t seem to get the TechSmith Codec to work with either program. I can get uncompressed MOV files to work, but I was hoping to use a file size that is much smaller. I would like to use Camtasia because most of our video tutorials are Windows based. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

You have to change the techsmith to something the FCP likes. Since you are coming from windows, try exporting as a Photo JPEG. Good quality, the file sizes will be manageable and FCP will understand them.

    Jeremy,

Is Photo JPEG for still images? I’m looking to convert a recorded movie of an application from the Techsmith AVI codec to something else. I’m new to the FCP process, so I’m a little green on the video conversion formats.

    Thanks,

No sir, it’s a video codec called Photo JPEG. You can export right out of Quicktime Pro.

    Jeremy,

Thank you. I converted the AVI in QuickTime Pro and it worked well in FCP. Would you mind answering one more question? When I bring the file into FCP the video in the Viewer looks crisp, but the video in the Canvas window is blurred. The original video is a strange size since I did a screen capture (876 x 632). When I kick out a finished AVI, is there a way I can make it match the original 876 x 632? The finished product is for a computer display so I don’t have to worry too much about form factor. I believe the 640 x 480 is also why the canvas is blurry. I have the canvas viewing set to 100% – any thoughts? Is this a Sequence Settings Issue? I really appreciate you taking the time to help me.

    Thanks,
    Andy

It’s because the video isn’t rendered and the canvas is a lo res preview of your video anyway, so don’t trust it.

You can edit at that frame size by manually changing it in the sequence settings, but it might be a bit weird as FCP really wants to deal with standard video frame sizes. It’s probably best to edit at a standard frame size and let FCP scale the image to fit.
