CAMERA WIPE
Hey Guys-
I am doing a vertical wipe between two shots. Both shots have a vertical line in them and both of them tilt up. My goal is to have the vertical line from shot A to move down the screen while having the contents of shot A below it. Shot B will wipe in above the line in shot A.
I am editing in Avid Xpress DV in a 60i timeline. The point of the wipe is to transition from 60i 4:3 to 24p letter boxed footage. Shot A was actually captured at 30p with 1/60th sec shutter speed so it would still have a little bit of flicker. Shot B was captured at 24p with a 1/48th shutter. I tried doing a vertical wipe with Avid’s effects editor with pretty good success until the final frames. The wipe slipped and there litterally wasn’t enough Y values. Odd.
I imported Quicktime reference files into AE. I am trying to draw a mask and animate it into the other shot. I am not having any success moving the mask from frame to frame. Could I also import the footage into AE @ 59.94 F.P.S so I could break up each individual field? Would I then run into problems when I import the footage back into Avid? I believe there is a simple solution to all of this in front of me. You guys have been a great help to me in the past I would sincerely appreciate any help what so ever.

i’m not sure exactly what your doing… but the problem i see is the differing frame rates. your comp can only have one frame rate. so if you work in a standard 29.97 comp, your 24p footage will have one duplicate frame every fifth frame to compensate for the frame rate difference.
if you don’t want the duplicate frame, you will need to add a 3:2 pulldown to get the 24p up to 29.97 (the same way to get film frame rates to video frame rates). you can probably add the pulldown exporting out of avid, but then you’ll run into a scaling problem to get the 16:9 to fit 4:3… (you can’t scale interlaced footage, well you can, but it will look like crap)
so i guess you can render the scaled 24p footage in ae as 29.97. drag the footage onto the new comp button. go to the comp settings and change the pixel aspect from 1.2 to .9 (the frame size should still be 720×480). select the footage in the timeline and choose layer>transform>fit comp width. now it should look letter boxed… send the 24p comp to the render queue, and click the render settings to set the fields and pulldown. then import the render to work with in a standard comp.
rather than using a mask, you might try linear wipe from the transitions effects, but the mask should work too, just click the stop watch for the mask path parameter, move ahead in the timeline and reposition the mask. you should now see two keyframes for mask path.
