Camera Through Wall?
Posted by Michael Zoppo on August 14, 2007 at 5:13 pmAnybody have any ideas for having a camera pan through a wall, now Im not talking about the camera looking at the wall and zooming through it, im talking about the camera parallel to the wall and panning through it. I have a few ideas, but something tells me they will crash and burn.
Cheers

August 14, 2007 at 5:24 pmSo the camera is in room A, close to the wall, it starts to pan toward the wall, then once it’s facing the wall, it continues to pan, but it’s now in another room?
I’d either do a flash at the transition, or: place a painting (or something) on the wall of room A and room B. So when we pan, we are looking into room A to the left of the painting, then we’re looking directly at the painting, then we’re looking into room B to the right of the painting. Since the painting is in room A and room B, we can make the cut when we’re looking straight at the painting.
In AE, you could do it with two sub-comps, transitioning between, using the same camera.
Does that make sense?

I think we’re confused about our terms here. Is the camera’s lens pointing parallel to the wall? If so, and in fact in all cases, you can’t ‘pan’ through a wall. Panning is turning the camera left to right just like turning your head left to right, it swivels on the same point in space. Do you want the camera to track to the right or left through the wall?

August 14, 2007 at 5:41 pmIf I have been using my terms wrong, (which i do quite often) then yes, I would like the camera to track through the wall.

August 15, 2007 at 2:17 pmThat sounds awesome Dave I would love to see a clip if you had one? I didn’t quite grasp the concept but that sounds really great.
