The best bet is always to send it to one of the Sony Service Center’s on the page below since most independently operated “Authorized Service Centers” really on deal with consumer equipment, but more often than not won’t tell you that … in many cases they just take your money and ship the gear to a Sony Service Center just as you could do yourself without their markup.

However, if you are in a major TV market, there is likely a repair center close by that services all the local TV stations and is plenty qualified to service most pro gear. For example, here in Tampa/St.. Pete, Florida there is one that is owned by the same parent company that owns several of the local TV and radio stations (Media General).

My HVR-A1 ate a tape and that’s where I had to send it. Be prepaired to spend some money.

[Danny Hays] “Be prepared to spend some money”

Indeed … but, you will also need to be prepared to spend some money if you choose to let someplace other than Sony tinker with your camera and you end up having to replace it altogether.

You might also consider buying an extended warranty … not sure about that particular camera, but extended warranties on pro gear can often be bought well after the initial equipment purchase, without any inspection for pre-existing conditions and either directly from the manufacturer or from re-sellers like B&H.

The camera is about four years old, so warranty was probably out of the question. Also I looked into gettin it repaired from a local camera shop, and sony does not supply them with schematics and manuals anymore, forcing us to sent it to Sony.
All it did was eat a tape, and it just died. They said it bent some gears in the tape handling mechanizim it and blew the main board and the fuse. ?????
What good was the fuse? They’re put them there to protect the hardware. Not a big fan of Sony cameras anymore, or tape based ones anyway.
Also when I got it back, it didn’t charge my battery through the camera anymore. I got in touch with the main engineer from sony repair there at Teanech and he sad it’s probably the battery being defective. So I just bought an ext. battery charger and it’s charging that battery. I’m still waiting for my new batteries to arrive to see if they charge through the camera.
I want to sell this A1 but need it to be fully operational.
I hope you have better luck than I have. Sincerely, Danny Hays

Honestly, depending on the type of problem the camera is having, it may not be worth repairing. Especially if it is a problem on the main board or the lens. Your best bet would be to find a facility that offers FREE estimates..

I talked them down from an $800 estimate for repair to $400, and I can sell it for $1500 so yes it was worth repairing.
