Is there a way to fly a camera in 3D over a large plane of squares without actually having to position all of the squares? In other words, so that they reposition themselves accordingly – not only to the camera’s position, but to its view?

I want to be able to animate the squares if needed, so i dont want to use the grid effect (or really pre-comps for that matter). But I want the grid to basically have the appearance of being huge without actually having 1000s of layers.

This is not that easy actually.

I usually just put one large square or circle directly under the camera and let it move along with the camera at groundlevel. I then apply an offset effect so a semaless or very large texture on it appears to move, eventhough the solid itself does not move relative to the cam.

How exactly do you want to animate the squares ?

Because an expression that repositions ‘invisible squares’ (ie. behind the camera) back in front near the horizon,
will make it hard to predict exactly which layer you’re seeing on the ground at any moment.
