Any one know where I can get the Camera Mic for the Varicam? I know they make a Microphone & Mount combo for around $1,000 but this seems a little expensive. I have the bracket that mounts to the Viewfinder all I need is the Microphone to go along with it. Any Ideas?

Did Panasonic keep the price down by leaving some of the parts off? This sounds like one of JVC’s maneuvers, not Panasonic’s.

    Hi Steve,
The list price of the VariCam does not include a few things, even the Viewfinder. I imagine that’s so the camera can be configured for whatever use is needed, field or studio. It certainly does make the camera appear a little less expensive than it actually is.

As far as the Microphone goes, we use a Schoeps in the holder; although we use it only for capturing ambient sound, it seems to work well. I can’t imagine anyone using a camera mounted microphone on a camera like a VariCam to capture dialog.

    Good shooting!

At first I took to mic of my dvx100 until I could get something better. Like most everyone it’s just to get nat. sound when doing b-roll. I ended up buying a sanken from Trew Audio. I could have gone a little cheaper but liked the sound and it was a bit shorter than other shotguns.

Sorry I missed this earlier, Leo. I was just taking a little stab at you Varicam guys. We use our on-camera mic when we’re doing corporate interviews and we need to hear the questions without running a mic cable.

    Hope you’re doing well.

    Hi Steve,
Both sound like a good ideas; using the on-camera microphone for the interviewer’s questions and poking fun!

I’m usually so close to the subject that we can pick up the interviewer’s questions with the subject’s boom.

    Good shooting, my friend!
