First, how durable is the DVX 100A? I recently seriously whacked mine against a tree which nearly obliterated the battery but the camera seems fine. However, I started thinking I may need some insurance. Any recommendations for reputable/ good rates camera insurance providers?

You might want to consider a policy that covers more than just the camera. What if, next time, your camera doesn’t hit a tree, but rather, somebody’s head? or picture window, or…..well, you get the picture (no pun intended).

I personally have created a separate business entity for my “adventures” with the DVX. I carry a comprehensive policy that covers my camera, tripod, light kit, computers and ALL the equipment in my production company. You never know when the basement’s going to flood, literally.

While my livelihood is not based to any large part on my work as an independent producer (I’m a corporate video guy), I do enough work, and generate enough income, and have a large enough investment that it makes sense to pay about $500 per year for a policy that protects me, my gear and most importantly, my personal assets.

Talk to an insurance agent about a commercial policy to see what’s available.

Insurance…’tis better to have and not need, then to need and not have.

Yes I’ve recently thought of covering all that too. $500 sounds reasonable, do I just ask any insurance agent(agency, broker) about this or are there brokers, agencies that specialize in our field?

This sounds kind of strange, but I’ve found the less they (the broker) knows about “the business”, perhaps the better.

Most agencies have a commercial division, though if you have a homeowners policy, you can probably add the camera to that. Where it gets complicated (in that scenario) is if you’re making money off it, and taking it on the road.

I purchased my commercial policy through the agent I also have my homeowners and auto insurance through. I didn’t really investigate other options.

Bottom line is that I’m comfortable with what I’m getting for what I pay, and in the abscense of a claim, that’s the “peace of mind” insurance buys.

does that homeowners coverage include insurance for the rest of the production including things like injury liability?

My “homeowners” policy does not cover damages/injuries to others, it simply covered my camera when I added it.

Now, if you meant the Commercial Policy I referenced, yes, that has (limited) coverage for damages/injuries to others.

Your best bet is to talk to an agent…and not some yahoo you “met” on the internet 🙂

    Cheers,

    Tim
