I have created a fairly realistic camera flash by using a lens flare and white solid with an expanding feathered irregular star shaped mask. I used it as a transition, so I had it completely fill screen. I ramped the opacity up very quick, within a couple of frames. I then ramped the opacity back down just a little slower. It “looked” a lot better when I added the shutter noise effect.

I am not an expert. See what others have to say. I am sure there is a better way.

Effect Essentials used to have a freebie named EE Camera Flash (alas no more), but if you scroll on Aharon’s head at the top, the graphics commando (see camo hat) and scroll down to “Creating a Film Flash Transition”, you can do the same thing. Don’t use it as a transition, just go back to the same image.

Sorry, I thought my simple explanation was enough. You have to apply the lens flare to some type of a layer as you did. If you applied it to a black solid, you need to then use something like Knoll unmult, or use a blend mode such as screen to get rid of the black.

I think you can download Knoll unmult for free. Do a search for it. It will magically make the black go away. A blending mode will do similar.

Let me know if you need more details on the star shaped mask which is on another layer (white solid).
