  • Camcorder pass-through usage…

Posted by Tom Carter on March 31, 2006 at 12:36 am

Having read through some posts my eyes have been opened to the possibilities of using my video camera as a pass-through between my mac (via firewire) and a broadcast monitor. My question is simply this: Is there any danger of wearing out anything in the camera through prolonged use of this setup? If so is there any sort of box I can get to do the same thing, and how much would it cost?

    Cheers,
    Tom

Well hours on your ccd will far outlast your recording deck so I doubt it would be a terrible thing. Now Using your batteries wouldn’t be good so stick with the ac.

… and you’re not actually using the CCD during pass-through, no? Anyway, I’m with Andrew: go ahead and do it. But on AC, of course.

Yeah. I meant if he was using as a live camera without recording. I thought he meant live passthrough but I just… Um….
    It’s my first day.

Yeah I figured it the batteries mightn’t think too much of it.

Although I’m not using the camera it does still display on the CCD… there doesn’t seem to be a way to disable it.

    Thanks for your replies,
    Tom

Ah. Yes. You mean LCD. The CCD is the thing that sits behind the lens and records the outside world. Charge-Coupled Device.

Nope, don’t know how to disable LCDs. It might be best to close the big flip-out one, at least.

    Carry on … 🙂

If you were really worried (which you probably shouldn’t be), or simply wanted to free up resources so you don’t have to have your camera sitting on your desk all day Canopus make a box that converts firewire to standard composite outputs in a similar way to a camera. I think that this one here does it (might want to have a close look to check it has all the functionality you want – they have a few different models)

I think they are relatively pricey though. Not sure in USD but in Aussie dollars they used to be sitting around $300. The major reason why I have my camera sitting in front of me right now.
