I am a current Avid DS and Media Composer user looking hard at a facility switch to FCP.
I love the DS and the way everything is packed into one App (especially how it handles media) But I abhor the hefty price tag and “Assurance”. I’m seriously considering switching over to FCP with AE Shake and Motion to replace the DS. I would loooove to hear any experiences pro/con…..plus how Shake, AE, and Motion fit into the workflow….especially with clients over the shoulder. I’m afraid of the speed factor of jumping back and forth from apps to accomplish things I’m used to doing in a timely fashion.

Any and all input would be EXTREMELY appreciated.

    Thanks

    Rich

FCP has direct links to Shake and Motion…i.e. they open from within FCP so it’s pretty seamless… sort of like a module opening in an Avid system.

DS is real time with most of all it can do which is much deeper than FCP, and its HD and its real time HD! Its a massively fantastic platform, vs. FCP are you kidding?

With that said, for editing I would go with FCP over anything. For effects work give me the Avid. Can Motion Shake and AE act as a good substitute for DS? I don

    Rich,

Your requirements are definitely different than mine, but I can certainly speak to the issues involved with switching form an all Avid shop to an all FCP x-SAN set up.

Here’s a link to apple’s website for our story: https://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/customerstory.html

    Hi,

I have recently invested in an FCP system when opening my own little boutique. I have been an Avid editor for almost 10 years and have experience on everything BUT a DS.

I went for the FCP because it was the easiest way for me to get into the HD platform without taking otu a second mortgage on my house. I have been at it for 3 weeks now and have to say that I am pretty happy with my investment.

I am currently cutting a 1 hour doc for Discovery and am starting an HD project right after this one is done.

It has taken only a little adjusting to the way that FCP is set-up and operates but in the end it is just an editor. To date my workflow has not required me to get into Shake or motion or any of the other programs packaged with FCP (Shake has to be bought seperately as well as AE)but I have fooled around with them a little and they all seem very powerful. Motion has TONS of pre-builts that are VERY cool and I have spent a little time in Soundtrack pro to sweeten and fix some audio and I like it alot.

I am very happy with my purchase and am not worried that I won’t get clients ’cause I don’t have an Avid.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input guys. I know the DS is a great platform…there is good and bad….but to start a company from the ground up (which I am looking at) it is obviously very cost prohibitive. I’m fairly familiar w/ FCP and know AE really well. I am willing to learn Shake and Motion. I’m not fond of how FCP handles media though…(being spoiled by DS)… I wish Apple would put that high on their priority list.

I’m interested in those out there who use FCP in conjunction w/ Shake, Motion etc in a client atmosphere (or without). I do a lot of compositing and graphics in my edits. I know you can jump back and forth fairly easily from the apps leaving a reference clip in place that updates as you modify. Is it seamless? Is it clunky at times? The speed at which things get accomplished/rendered when clients are over the shoulder is a concern.

    Thanx again
