Caldigit VR vs. HD Element… and options for backup with VR
I’m trying to choose between getting a VR and HD Element. As I’m working with HD in ProRes, the VR should be adequate in terms of speed. It’s a matter of cost vs. security. What attracts me to the HD Element is the added security of RAID 5. The VR on the other hand has the added benefit of being more portable (should I later buy a Macbook Pro)… plus it’s cheaper, so if the VR workflow is fine, I’d probably go that route.
I’m working on corporate projects where the deadline is not particularly tight. If a drive goes down and I have a reasonable means of backup, such that at most I’d have lost a day or two… that would not be a huge problem. If I went with a VR, what would be the best / simplest way of backing up my work?
Note, on a given project, I’d imagine having between 5-10 hours of footage – probably shot on a EX1 or EX3.

Have an internal SATA drive and backup to that. Or any other cheaper firewire drive. Clone the drive…use Carbon Copy Cloner and your entire file structure will be maintained.

Thanks Shane. Good advice. I wasn’t familiar with Carbon Copy Cloner – looks great. So if I get a 2 TB VR or G-Raid3 and a 1 TB internal SATA, I can just backup to that until it reaches capacity?
I suppose the other alternative to a VR or G-Raid would be internal storage – Shane, what are your thoughts on internal storage vs an external two drive solution? I read your blog btw comparing those two products… very interesting.

I am using a 17″ MacBook Pro Laptop and I am looking at 4TB Caldigit VR and would be using Carbon Copy Cloner. I would like to set up the Caldigit VR as a Raid 0 and then have all the files backed up on another hard drive. If I don’t have to, I don’t want to use Raid 1. Any Suggestions on how to back up the VR with the MacBook Pro using Raid 0? Any suggestions which back up drive to get? Any Suggestions on how to set up this Raid System?
