  • CAF file do NOT MATCH settings… always need to be rendered?

Posted by Sara Petrai on March 3, 2010 at 11:56 am

    Hi everyone,

I’ve a issue this morning with my FCP.
I need to add some sound effects and music in a cartoon. I choose some CAF file from the Mac Library and imported them on FCP.

Here the problem: everytime I add them in the timeline I need to render, even if I just adjust the sound!
I tried to match the sequence setting with the Caf file but nothing

    where is the trick?
Is Caf ‘not friend’ with FCP??
    Mpegstreamclip won’t convert them anyway…

any suggestion for a quick solution are really welcomed!!
    many thank

Use soundtrackpro or QuickTime to make them
in to 48k 24 bit aifs.

CAF or Core Audio File is a compressed
audio file similar but different to mp3.

Fcp doesn’t like to play them natively.

Converting to a PCM audio structure (aif or wav) will solve it.

emm.. it looks like working better but still need a rendering every time I move a clip…
where am I wrong today?!I’ve also exported the cartoon on dv pal (which is bad quality for it..) and made a sequence on FCP dv-pal…
    is it motion A better?!

so why the mac library is on Caf?
is it for logic/soundpro a native format?!
Why media encore or mpegstream clip don’t like them either?

[sara petrai] “emm.. it looks like working better but still need a rendering every time I move a clip… “

AN audio clip? Did you convert he file to an aif and then reimport the new file and replace your old file?

[sara petrai] “so why the mac library is on Caf? “

Well, think about it. The SoundTrack Pro library comes with 20(?) GBs of CAF encoded audio files. If those were 48k 24 (or 16bit) wavs, it would easily quadruple the size of the file. That’s would take those 20GBs to 80GBs. That’s a little much. Same with the other CAF files for other programs. It’s more efficient.

[sara petrai] “is it for logic/soundpro a native format?! “

CAF files work in SoundTrackPro, yes, but you should export as something else.

[sara petrai] “Why media encore or mpegstream clip don’t like them either?”

Probably not tuned to work with CAF files. They are based on the Apple Lossless audio codec.

    thanks jeremy!

well… I did exactly what you said and it was working fine with 2 o 3 audio tracks… the problem is I need to add differet sounds in the background and when I add the 4th.. it’s the same problem than before…
I guess the problem is too many audio files!

so I decided to switch to soundtrack pro and try to use it, never done before but thanks to the amazing people doing tutorials I’ll mixed everything! ( fortunally I’ve one week for this project!)
    is it the right solution??!

thanks for your time and explanation!
if you have any tips for me I’m just waiting your post!!

If you’ll do this a lot, checkout Digital Heaven’s Loader. It automatically converts audio to 48k 16 bit on import. It’s a great little program.
