  • C4D XL v.7.3

I’ve had a need for a 3D app for a while but I couldn’t afford one. I’ve always planned to get C4D especially the current v9.5 listed at $695. But, an opportunity presented itself yesterday to get the XL version 7.3 (which I beleive was originally out in 2002) from Maxon in a clearance promo. So, I got it for $295. I did a search of that release and found that it was well recieved at the time. I also saw that the XL version is still being sold for $1,800 in some places.

So, I figure this is a good deal, right? I get to finally jump into a 3D app I’ve always wanted. It’s just an earlier version until I can upgrade to the current release. The thought was to be able to learn 3D and get going in that direction and incorporate it into my current workflow.

Can any longtime users give me some advice from their experiences or any comments? Any at all.

Have a look at the uprgrade prices from Maxon before buying to make sure you understand their policy. It can be quite pricey.

As far as the the XL version selling for 1800$, I would think it would be the latest version ( 9.5). Buying 7,3 XL for that price would be just a huge rip-off!.
If you are in the US, check out the prices at http://www.novedge.com ( tip from AdamT), they sell the XLbundle (9.5) for ca. 1200$.

If you are just trying out for now, there are a lot of free programms out there as well, such as wings3d, or blender which are quite to learn the basics ( Wingsw is also in general a good polyon modeller).

v7.3 is missing a lot of the workflow improvements/modelling tools that I like about Cinema4d. It still is a good programm, and has things you won’t get in the 9,5 core release ( well, radiosity and caustics…).
I would still rather go with 9.5 Core if you can afford it.
It is just much more evolved.

Well, I commited to the purchase and I looked in the galleries of those who have used and it looks good enough to get me going in the direction of 3D. From what I gather the the XL 7.3 still bring a bit of the power I need until I can upgrade into r9.5.

    We’ll soon see.

I appreciated your comments yesterday and went back to Maxon and they have agreed to allow me to return the unopened v7.3 XL for the current R.9.5 Basic of C4D. I figure that even though I don’t have the Advanced Renderer Module I can make up a little of the lighting and such with Combustion.

    Thanks

I( of course) think you made the right choice 😉
There are a lot of tricks to get good lighting with c4d, everything does not require Radiosity.
Have a look at this as well,
    https://www.bobtronic.de/plugins/

there is a new and free plugin from Bobtronic called Enlighter,
which allows to simulate GI lighting with an Ambiant Occlusion path.,

    Thanks again.

What are you using? The Studio or XL 9.5?

I visited your webiste. You guys do great stuff.

My company is into live performance visuals for live concerts. Visuals that are splashed on jumbotrons and huge LED screens. At least, that’s where we are going. We’ve been videotaping concerts and authoring/designing DVDs. You have any advice on fastrack learning of C4D for logo-broadcast design work, etc?

    Hi Keith,
we are running cd4 9.1 studio, it is good ot have the more advanced tools when you need them. – though quite a bit of the stuff we have on our website only requires the core of C4d. –
the concept you just described sound interseting as it mixes installations with graphics( as i understand it).
If you are new to 3d you will need to first grasp the basic concepts of workflow/ organisation of c4d. Go through the quickstart exemples, –
    and ask on the forums,
another good one for cinem4d,and that is quite active- is CGtalk.com –
there are quite a few people doing MotionGraphics that post there,
