  • C4D R12 Interface Won’t Fully Open

Posted by Ron Moore on December 6, 2010 at 2:30 am

I’ve gone from version 11 to 12 Broadcast and installation went smoothly. Aside from not knowing where to find some textures R12 seemed like a good transition and definite upgrade. I opened a few R11 models and all seemed to function as advertised. However, when I had Cinema check out my GeForce 7600GT graphics card it as much as said it was borderline and Enhanced OpenGL might cause the program to crash. It recommended I go get the latest NVidia graphics card driver. When I put on the newest driver C4D started this behavior of opening the interface but not the Perspective View, just a black gray plane in its place. When I tried to open a file, it triggered the hourglass and the program has never fully opened.

It was suggested that my graphics card was the issue and that a GeForce GTS450 might be a reasonably-priced solution. I just installed it with sadly the same result, no 3D for me. Can someone please give me a clue as to where to look next? I’m beginning to think that my installation of Cinema may be the culprit. Should I re-install the program over itself? I now have quite a large investment in 3D and would hope to get things moving in the right direction.

The first thing I would do if I was you would be to trash your existing Cinema preferences folder. If you can access the R12 preferences you should see a button at the bottom that says, “Open Folder Preferences”. When you click that it should open an explorer window that contains a number of folders, including a preferences folder. Delete the preferences folder and restart Cinema. Also, if you’ve created a file called new.c4d in your main Maxon directory, delete that file.

If that doesn’t fix the problem I would try Maxon’s tech support. It’s free. You could also try uninstalling and reinstalling from scratch. If you do, make sure that the preferences folders were removed.

Do you have other applications that rely on OGL, and if so are they working normally?

    Adam,

Thanks. I went in and deleted the Preferences folder but same story when I opened Cinema, so I figured I’d better go to the source. Chris over at Maxon Support said to send a screenshot of my interface and hopefully we can get this moving in the right direction. We opened it up in Software Mode and in Preferences we checked out the new card I just installed (the GeForce GTS450) and it gave it high marks for OpenGL capabilities, but in software mode there was this milky-white film over the Perspective Viewport (but at least I could now make out the 3D axes). I appreciate all your great advise and for taking the time to help.

Just wanted to thank you for your help. I’m now up and running with version 12! All it finally took was an updated driver on that graphics card you recommended and an online upgrade of Cinema itself.
