  • C4D hangs when opening .igs files

Posted by Sam Young on September 8, 2008 at 3:12 am

i’m using C4D r10.5 with the Engineering Extension on Mac OS 10.5.4.

my client has given me five .igs files and only one of them will open in C4D. the rest cause C4D to hang and then go unresponsive. incidentally, the one .igs file that will open is the smallest in file size but i’m not sure if this has any importance.

i don’t have access to the original CAD file from whence these .igs files came, nor do i have a CAD app.

has anyone else had this problem? how did you solve it?
is there any setting in C4D that could help?

or are the .igs files i got corrupt?

    halp!

How long did you wait before you determined that C4D was hung? If it was just a few minutes you might want to give it more time. Complex .igs files can take a long time to load.

on all of them, i let C4D think for at least fifteen minutes.

i looked at my Activity Monitor and saw “Cinema 4D (not responding)”

should i wait longer than fifteen minutes for a file to open? that’s absurd.

It’s probably something else if it’s taking that long. You might send a file to Maxon support and see if they can figure it out. IGS can be tricky because there are so many variants, but if the client is using the same export options that shouldn’t be a problem….

Past experience with Iges files from V9 importer – it did a pretty good job. Off the top of my head it would not import some IGES objects – an error mentioning ‘manifold’ springs to mind, and from what I’ve been told, the v10 version did the same ( a limitation of the scope of the plugin rather than a bug)

If you are stuck and need it converted – I’ll give it a go in solidthinking – save out as 3ds

    regards
