I’ve been using Cinema 4D off and on for years. Recently I’ve let my subscription lapse and I’m considering signing up again. But with the advent and explosion of AI I’m beginning to wonder about whether Cinema 4D is still a viable tool or not. My uses of Cinema 4D have largely been focused on using Mixamo figures and some modeling.

Please let me know your opinion of the viability of Cinema 4D today with the advent of AI.

    Thank you!

    Hi James,

This might require someone more knowledgeable or specialized in AI, but from my experience, I believe that AI has had a significant impact on clients who are only interested in converting an idea into a 2D or 3D image or even a short video. However, those who have clearly defined professional projects that require precision in execution, especially those who need source files for subsequent modifications according to their requirements, these types of clients still turn to designers working on 3D modeling programs such as Cinema 4D, Blender, Maya, and others. However, I hope that someone with good experience in AI will participate to provide us with more useful information on the subject.

    You’re welcome, James!

“YOU WON’T BE REPLACED BY AI, BUT BY DESIGNERS WHO MASTER ITS TOOLS”

Perhaps this quote sums up the topic. It is still worth learning 3D design and using its programs, but the designer only has to incorporate artificial intelligence tools into the workflow to keep pace with the market.

    Hey James and Kouraib,

Yes, A.I. is here to stay.

And Yes, it will have an increasing impact on our industry in so many ways.

But those using A.I. for everything, might never have used a professional for their output in the first place. As they don’t want to pay for it. And, eventually we (the “consumer”) will all tire of seeing the “same” A.I. rolling over our screens.

We are already seeing the likes of Topaz releasing Bloom, that is created to make A.I. generated images look better and more realistic.

Cinema 4D, in my opinion, forgot years ago to look after their customers. This was down to a sales department thinking that they were walking on water, with the mantra “Don’t call us, we will call you” – they are laughing no more. As Cinema 4D has had to go on a purchase spree to keep their products relevant, and drop the price on their per seat subscription cost (as far as I can see, might be wrong on the price drop).

Pivot towards offering art direction and creative design input, whilst also learn Blender, Unity and Unreal + anything else that is free to use, with a big library of assets.

And, don’t forget to create a side-hustle of making your own stuff, that you are the owner of, and can monetize. Check out https://sidehustleschool.com daily podcast, plus past podcasts for inspiration.

Don’t be afraid of A.I., but do be its sceptical friend.

    Just an opinion.

Thank you Mads for enriching the discussion, I was looking forward to hearing from you, I completely agree with you in your description of the category of customers who think that AI is an alternative to designers.

My answer was as a 3D designer and not as a C4D user, and the issue of comparing C4D with other open source programs, especially Blender, the closest competitor, has been discussed before here and on many forums, and perhaps the only agreed upon flaw is that C4D is paid and some bad experiences with the support team. As for your advice about learning the other programs and using AI tools in a way that keeps the designer always the owner of the idea, I completely agree with you on this.
