c300 of the future
Posted by Ofer Geva on August 1, 2013 at 7:27 pmCouldn’t find if anyone else asked that so I’ll just go ahead- Is there (and I know probably no one here works at Canon) any chance the C300 will get a firmware update to enable 4K output, due to it’s 4K sensor and seeing how the Sony FS700 is getting said update?

August 1, 2013 at 7:43 pmOnly speculation, but my guess is that even if that were technically possible (which I kinda doubt), I don’t suspect that would be something that Canon would explore.
No doubt their answer would be that they already HAVE a 4K solution in the C series, the C500.
When anwering early complaints that the C300 did not have an interchangable lens mount, Canon did reply that they already had an answer for users of the EF version who also wanted to use PL lenses. That solution being to buy another camera body with the other mount.
I doubt Canon is going to do anything that will help them sell FEWER cameras.

August 1, 2013 at 7:54 pmWell, I guess 4K is not yet essential if they make such a little effort to satisfy this need…
Thank you for your quick response.

August 1, 2013 at 10:06 pmActually I don’t think that is true at all… Canon has made a huge effort in the 4K realm, both with the C500 and with DSLRs.
It’s just that they are not goosing up your present 1080 camera to 4K. Can’t really fault them for that… all that would really do for Canon is hurt their sales of the C500.
I wouldn’t call it a little effort at all.

August 14, 2013 at 3:01 pmWhat is the possibility that the guys at Magic Lantern are able to hack into the 4K sensor and get 4K footage from the C300 (or even the C100!)?
They seem to be on a roll getting into all sorts of Canon DSLRs.

August 20, 2013 at 2:47 pmA firmware update wont happen. 4K seems to be taking shape in production but its going to be a hard sell to consumers to buy new TV’s. The camera is selling very well so I cant see Canon making any big changes to it. The C100 could use a firmware update or two and has more room for hardware improvements.
Remember how long it took Canon to release the 5D MKIII? The MKII was selling so well they didn’t have to come out with the a new model for what four years.
