C100 mark i vs. 70D – uncompressed HDMI out

Using magic lantern, the 70D can output clean, uncompressed HDMI signal, but in lower resolution (1620×1080). The Canon C100 mark I can also send out uncompressed signal from HDMI.

My question is, from the standpoint of using the video for chroma keying, what is the difference between the two uncompressed videos coming out of these cameras, aside from resolution?

Magic Lantern does not send uncompressed RAW out the HDMI. The clean HDMI out is from Canon’s h.264 codec. It is not 10bit. ML only write RAW uncompressed to the CF or SD card.

Thanks Warren. But is the HDMI out from the 70D in 4:2:2? And for the C100 Mark i, is it 10bit?

Is the maximum bit depth for h.264 8-bit only?

I believe the HDMI on the 70D is 4:2:0 I don’t know the answer about the C100 without googling.

“External Monitoring & Recording
The EOS C100 features an industry standard HDMI port that can be used for either external monitoring or external recording purposes. This HDMI connector also contains an HDMI lock mechanism (for compatible HDMI cables), and is capable of outputting an 8-bit uncompressed signal.

When used to monitor or record to an external display, the uncompressed signal can carry industry standard timecode as either metadata in the video stream or as a superimposed timecode burn directly into the video footage. This latter feature is ideal for situations like recording legal depositions where this feature is oftentimes a requirement of the production.”

Thanks Warren! That means the C100 Mark I would be the better tool for green screen work than the 70D (with the Magic Lantern) since the C100 Mark I outputs 4:2:2

The 70D to a compact flash card with magic lantern will be 14bit raw. If you record out the hdmi to a recorder, you are not really getting any benefit from magic lantern. It might as well nit be installed.

I tried shooting raw before but my 70D stops recording after just a few seconds. It would have been very useful if i can record longer. I think 5D can record longer raw footages. If only there’s a work around for this.

The work around is faster sd cards. Look at the magic lantern specs or download the manual. I don’t think you can use compact flash cards in the 70d.
