I would recommend buying 2 SxS cards and then add the adapter with the SD cards as backup in case you run out of space on a long shoot.

The SxS cards have saved me on a couple of shoots where my shooter let the battery die. The cards restored themselves in camera with no problems. I can’t say the same for the SD cards. I had 2 get wiped out and wasn’t able to restore them.

Your best bet would be to also purchase an external CF recorder that would give you redundancy, so you have 2 locations of captured media. It’s not cheap, but gives you peace of mind and security.

Jim, I just went through this process earlier this year. I evaluated the 350, 320, EX1R, and the EX3, finally settling on the EX1R. OTOH – I know several outstanding DPs (including Rick Diamond) who are also very smart equipment-wise, who chose the EX3. I almost chose the 350 (2/3″ sensor, better lens, feathered zooms, better hand-held configuration) but the added weight and price sent me to the EX1R/EX3. The 320 – 1/2″ sensor – why bother? I finally chose the EX1R over the EX3 mostly due to a conversation I had with a repairman who’s seen a lot of broken EX3 viewfinders. I like the way the EX1R’s viewfinder tucks safely into the handle.

otoh – Feathered zooms are hard to do with the supplied lens (which can’t be replaced on the EX1R but can be on the EX3).

After reading a lot of horror stories on this forum about the SD cards, I went the SxS route. Again, YMMV– many excellent shooters have no problems with the SD cards.

Good luck. You are entering the HD world with many, many great choices, none of them bad. You’ll be very happy with the quality, but you also need to think about how to deal with tapeless archiving.

thanks for the input bob. my dealer is getting 2 ex1rs in this week so im just going to get it.
i too will suck it up and get the sxs and soon hopefully get the nanoflash for that piece of mind backup.
im trying to decide if i want to get a 64gb sxs for 1260.00 or 4 16gb cards at 340 each. id be swapping the 16’s out more, but ive got 3 backups in case one goes out. there are no 32s anywhere.
hopefully i will get an r with a decent zoom. i hear some are worse than others

Jim, good luck, you won’t be disappointed I feel sure. A final word of advice. Be sure to lay your hands (eyes) on the great DVD of Doug Jensen’s EX workshop produced by Vortex Media. I got mine from my dealer but in America they seem rather tougher but do be sure to get one, it will save you hours of investigation and a lot of trouble.

Bob mentioned archiving, that’s a whole heap of questions, make your film first then worry about that, no one seems to have arrived at the perfect answer yet. Sticking a final cut on to a tape and stacking it on the shelf is just not on any more.

The Nano Flash and Vortex Media’s video are both great choices. You’ll be set.

It doesn’t hurt to go ahead and get the adaptor and some SD cards, good for personal shooting as well.

[Michael Slowe] “the great DVD of Doug Jensen’s EX workshop produced by Vortex Medi”

I’ve been experimenting with the EX1R’s advanced image control settings, and could benefit from a good guide. Does this DVD address those issues, or is there some other, better source?

Jensen does cover Picture Profiles quite well but really concentrates on suggesting his own settings, arrived at after doing his own tests. The subject has been covered in great depth by people with great technical expertise on this forum in past months, maybe you can search it out. There is an expert EX cameraman called Chapman who lectures for Sony here in the UK, who has written papers on Picture Profiles and is well worth reading. He goes into the subject in great depth, I don’t know how far you want to go, for me Jensen’s settings seem just fine.

By the way, has anyone noticed how the editors and colourists for TV documentaries, are whacking up the saturation levels for HD to give, what to me, is a rather artificial look? Unless of course the DP’s are setting this in camera.

Don’t know I’m afraid, just do a search. Yes, any PP is easy to set up if you understand your camera and how to operate the menus. It’s all very intuitive.
