Buying new! What would you do?
Posted by Chris Bové on March 31, 2006 at 3:02 pmA fed-up Windows user buying a new Mac system soon. Can’t wait!
I have the $$$ for a G5 setup, but heard that a Powerbook with external firewire drives will do just fine for general offline editing on FCP. What would be the best setup? Max-out the memory and get LaCie drives? Not sure. If you could float me a quick list, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks SOOO much in advance.

personally, I’m waiting until August for the WWDC and see if the new Intel Desktops come out.

March 31, 2006 at 5:52 pmHi,
If you don’t need to run on batteries you might want to consider an iMac.
A friend got an iMac G5 for location editing. This is what he had to say:
“I just got my iMac today – infinitely faster than any powerbook I could have bought at three times the cost. I got the cheapest I could find: a new 1.6gHz 17″ with a CDRW/DVD and 256 RAM on eBay. I upgraded to 1GB RAM and got the iLugger bag.”and:
Can you capture DV with the G5 iMac to a drive other than the boot drive (one firewire bus)? If so are there any problems or tricks?
“Absolutely no problems. I upgraded the imac’s drive to a 320gb and could capture to that drive but I have a firewire drive workflow. I capture to a FWHD on the iMac. I use a Buslink 6 port FW hub on the imac. I really like the imac G5.This is the bag he got for location use:
https://luggerbags.com/G5.htmAssuming there are no problems with the Intel version of FCP, or you don’t need to run an Application which is not Intel Native (like AE) a MacbookPro or Intel iMac would be your best choices (Dual Core). An Intel iMac won’t have better performance than a Macbookpro but you can have a 20″ screen and still save a few hundred dollars. On the other hand if you need a G4/G5 based solution an iMac G5 will toast a G4 Powerbook.
Best Wishes,
Mitch

We'd like to help you but the decisions ire ultimately yours. You will enjoy the operating system but you should consider the entire package of ramifications. How much in your computing life do you need to replace or update to port it to Macintosh. Be sure to include those items in your budget. I'd research this much more carefully than you appear to have done. Buy a copy of Scot Kelby's or David Pogue's "Switching to Macintosh" books. Take them to the gym, pore over them with some objectivity. Find other switchers by attending a Mac User Group meeting and try to separate the evangelists from the pragmatists. It's might not be as easy as you want it to be, nor as cheap, nor as much fun, nor as stable. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

March 31, 2006 at 11:35 pmMacs are the same but different. I love the tool because its what I know best. Comfort factor.
As far as Ti book or G5, it does depend on your needs. I have hauled my g5, raid, and cinema desplay to another state before and I’ve also cut on a 15″ powerbook. They both suck. But I’ve never seen someone cutting in the park on a G5!
Ultimatly you have to decide what the tool needs to do. Do you want power and expandibility or do you need to produce a finished dvd in the jungle to the monkeys you just shot?
Welcome to the team!
