Buying New PC
Posted by Frank Carino on May 15, 2011 at 10:30 amI learned a lot about VEGAS reading through your posts in this forum.
I have an old PC and am searching to buy a new one with a better performance.
I live in Italy and I have no access to your online stores in USA.
I saw this one https://www.apmshop.it/it/shop/p/HP/Notebook%20PC%20E%20Server/Personal%20Computer%20–%20Workstation/PC/HP%20Desktop%20Pavilion%20Elite%20HPE-531it,%20NEW%20Processore%20Intel%20core%20i7-2600%20,%20RAM%208GB%20ddr3,%20Hard-Disk%202TB/3236397c323232387c313737323534.
Please let me know what you think about it.
TIA.

That PC should perform awesome. It’s has the latest Intel Core i7-2600 3.4Ghz processor, 8G of RAM, a 2TB Hard-Disk, and a high end nVidia GTX460 with 2GB of memory. That is state-of-the-art right now. You will enjoy editing on that PC.
The only thing I would add is a second hard drive when you get it. Keep all of your video projects on that second hard drive so that you are not contending with the operating system for the first one while editing or rendering.

OK I’m glad I was on the right spot.
As you advice, the second HD and a good monitor are checked on my buying list.Francesco

do good graphic cards really enhance Vegas workflow or rendering speed? As I’ve done my research, there is no evidence that Vegas uses GPU or any Cuda technology.

Hi John,
I don’t think you get any great advantage using a high spec graphic card for the rendering, it may help you during the editing workflow for the preview. This is what the gurus say ….https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/24/928368#928779

Rendering speed only.

I’m not sure what “research” you did but Vegas’ use of both CUDA and OpenCL are documented in the features on their web site and there is a “Check GPU” button on the rendering window. So, yes, Vegas does use CUDA technology.

Actually it’s the other way around. Vegas will use the GPU for rendering Sony AVC files but it will not help the Vegas editing workflow.
Having said that, your statement is true if you use plug-ins like Boris Continuum Complete (BCC7). It absolutely makes a difference in your editing workflow because Boris uses the GPU to accelerate it’s FX. There are also plug-ins from GenArts that make use of the GPU. This is why I recommend getting a good graphics card.

A bit of a late reaction, but how should I look at the 8G of RAM with respect to i7 being triple channel technology, as I learnt from this forum. I notice that a lot of pre-configured computers have 8GB of RAM. Shouldn’t the RAM size be 3 times xGB in case of triple channel?

You made an assumption that ALL Core i7’s have triple channel memory which is no longer true. The new 2xxx series are dual channel so 8GB of memory is correct.
