buying new laptop for old avid system, need advice

Hello all,

I have been using and continue to use Avid Pro HD 5.2.1 (it works, i don’t have a lot of funds) but want to get a new laptop to run it on. I know I will need to run it on XP2, but also have the other following minimal requirements from Avid: 1.8 GHz Pentium 4 or Xeon, 4GB, and NVIDIA Driver 67.22.

The question is: does anyone have recommendations for a new laptop computer that would work with the system? Having a very limited understanding of processors and graphics drivers, I am worried that I will buy something new that won’t work with the old system.

Hi Michael,

If I am reading this correctly, the link is for Media Composer. I am using Pro HD 5.2.1

Is there a connection I don’t understand?

I assumed Media Composer, thus the matrix. Most of those products were derived from MC codec base, so they may share similar requirements. Pro and HD were just marketing names.

I guess my concern is: are there processors or graphics cards that would be incompatible with this older system? Based on the MC matrix, it looks like this would be the equivalent of the 2005 models (which seems right) which under the “Qualified PC’s” column have “Not applicable” listed.

At this point I am looking for recommendations or advice. When I call Avid, there response is: buy a new system.

Different version numbers, though, Michael. Pretty sure that Xpress Pro 5.8 was the same core software as Media Composer 2.8 and Symphony Nitris 1.8.

Hardware compatibility for XP5.8 would then match those for MC2.8.

Hi again,

I think I need to clarify my questions. Really what I am trying to understand is what hardware will and will not cause conflicts with the older software. Under the “Qualified PC’s” column, my system seems to fall under “N/A” (not applicable), so I don’t know if there is a kind of processor or graphics card that will not function with version 5.2.1.

Does my question make sense?
