I am thinking of upgrading my system in the next five months. Was wondering if anyone could weigh in on what the best deals are PC/MAC etc. I am planning on spending 5-6k. I know Mac will release a new tower sometime in the spring, most likely.

I am a mac based user currently, would consider switching to PC if price/performance comparison is worth it. I’m not very knowledgable about PC’s.

Thanks for any input in advance.

Stick with MAC and do a “google” on Intel/Mac, MAC On intel or Intel on MAC etc.. etc.. You will find that it is possible to run windows on your MAC. Having that said.. both will do the work for you depending on what you are looking for.. Take a look at this blog https://blogs.adobe.com/skilisky/

As part of your decision, do not consider Windows Vista as an OS. Reports say that it will not work well with pro apps such as AE.

The MacPro is very competitive with high-end PC workstations so it’s more an issue of preference. Granted, AE does not run natively on the MacPro at the moment but that will change soon. Also, consider the cost of transferring platforms in terms of replacing software.

I personally run AE in Windows but on my MBP via Bootcamp. When we get a UB version for the mac I will switch back over with pleasure 🙂

I am able to run AE on Vista just fine, although my system currently runs XP faster. However, keep in mind that since Vista was just released, driver/app support is not quite there yet. Once the drivers/apps mature, Vista will look a lot more attractive–especially the 64-bit version, which will be able to take advantage of large amounts of memory with compatible 64-bit apps.

I can run everything I need to on a PC; some people need/want a Mac–it’s just personal preference. The new Mac Pros are a great way to get the best of both worlds.

Also, whatever machine you end up getting, you might want to look into getting one with a quad core CPU which should help with video editing and other multi-threaded tasks. It should be doable within the budget you specified, but if you are not ready for that yet, I would recommend at least a dual-core or other MP machine.

They’re both great tools, use which ever you’re most comfortable with.

I also run AE on my Vista PC with no problems, though I’d recommend waiting another 6-12 months or so till hardware manufacturers offer reliable Vista support…sometimes there are driver reliability trade offs with a PC’s cost and flexibility benefits.
