  • Buy or lease Mac Pro system?

Posted by Kent Beeson on February 5, 2008 at 8:53 pm

Bout to take the plunge – could lease, could buy – anybody out there lease their MAC PRO? Good thing to do? or should I just buy it? Probably cost me about $6500 for the 3.0 I may get.

    Thanks much

Well what does leasing mean in terms of adding 3rd party hardware like a Kona card?

$6500? What are you putting in there?

    Well, there’s the nVidia 8800 card, 8 gigs non-Apple RAM, 2 x 750GB drives, 1×23″ Apple display, Applecare…starts to add up…

As for 3rd party the lease company says no problem, they’ll just add the hardware in as if/when I request.

If you are like me and need more work to earn more money to apply all my write offs to, than buying is better. But, if you have made too much money or plan to make too much money this year then leasing offers a better write off.

You always pay more on a lease than paying up front in cash. Shop around for your lease as the buy out can be $10.00 at the end or it can be $1000.00.

“everything is broken” ……1st. coined by Esther Philips I believe.

I leased my Octocore this last round because I got a 0% 24 month lease. I am doing kind of what you are thinking about, I leased just the machine, with 8 gigs Ram, good video card and an internal striped Sata array, and one extra drive for Windows Vista for boot camp. I actually bought the Kona cards and external Raid arrays, as they can be used later on another system. It seems I am upgrading every two years now anyway, and I will probably always just trade the older MAC computer in for the newest, fastest model every 2 years, and just reuse the Raid arrays, Aja cards, etc. in the new model.

Dual 2.5 G5, IO, Kona LH, IO, Medea Raid, UL4D, NVidia 6800, 4Gig RAM
Octocore 8 GB Ram, Radeon card, MBP, MXO
Windows XP Adobe Studio CS3, Vegas 8.0, Lightwave 9.2, Sound Forge 9, Acid Pro 6, Continuum 5, Boris Red 4, Combustion 2008, Sapphire Effects

I leased my very first system, but since then I buy. I prefer to have the option to sell the machine at any time.

yep, I’m going to buy, not lease – the lease deal was not that great, certainly not 0% as Christopher got, and there is the benefit to sell the equipment later…Thanks for all replies, very helpful
