  • Buy full version Avid Media Composer?

Posted by George Huwyler on April 2, 2024 at 2:25 pm

    Hello

We have started editing a documentary in the Media Composer Trial version. We will continue editing in June. Do I have to convert the trial version, which expires tomorrow, into a purchase now or can I do it in June without the timeline with the already edited part expiring/ falling of/ vanished?

Thank you very much for your reply.

    Best regards

    George

    Which version did you install?
I was asking the same about MC First and I found out you cant open any bins in any other MC version.

Thanks, Eric, for your reply. I had the intention to install the MC Version, but realized that the system installed the MC ultimate version – I don’t know if this happened by coincidence? And now I would like to buy and install the normal MC version as intended at the beginning. I hope that bins you mentioned can be opened when we continue with the editing. What do you think?

    Kind regards, George

I believe the issues is only with the Media Composer First versions.

Since its a “free” version they dont want you to elevate the projects to the upper MC versions.

    Hey George,

As Eric stated, if you are on Avid First, then you are stuffed.

However, as long as the versions of you Media Composer software matches, it should interchange between the “Standard” and the Ultimate version.

Avid is good at hiding this information, took me a few searches before I found it:

Yes, you should be able to open someone else’s Media Composer project regardless of whether it was created in Media Composer or Media Composer | Ultimate. But if you are on Media Composer | First, sharing projects with Media Composer or Media Composer | Ultimate is not allowed.

The ability to open project files primarily depends on software version compatibility. To avoid any compatibility issues, it is advisable to open projects on the same version/build of Media Composer. This ensures that all of the features and functionality of the project will be available, as newer versions may contain features that were not yet available in older versions.

Although depending on what the process is for completing the documentary, you may want to consider whether the cost of Ultimate, and what that comes with, is not that “much more” than the standard version on an annual deal.

Should state that I come from a long bygone time when Avid was £ 60,000, before even getting out of bed.

So £ 439.00/year, is not alot of money for the overall budget if you are working on a fully funded documentary.

    Hope that this helps?

Keep in mind Avid just sent out an email about changes in their pricing.

No idea what it is, we only pay for ProTools support now.

We gave up on Avid years ago and Im stuck with a non working 2018 dongle/license 😛

    Dear Mads

Please apologize my late reply. I very much appreciate your help by answering my question. So, I will buy the MC ultimate version to be sure to find the bins/ timelines we have already created.

Thanks again for your support and all the best to you

    Hey George,

    You are very welcome.

Like Eric, I’ve got the keyboard, but not currently using AVID as customer demand is not keeping up.
Although, and this might soon be back in vogue:
“No manager has ever got sacked for buying AVID”.

If AVID stay away from the generative A.I. they might just have a place in Current Affairs and Documentaries.

Should add, that A.I., sorry, Machine Learning, have a place Broadcasting News for locating clips faster, and improve on audio and video quality.
Just not the A.I. where you get three legged people with six fingers on each hand, in an alien environment 😀

Do come back, once released, and tell us where we can watch your documentary.
