    Hi,

I’m tired of printing to miniDV tape to back up my work. Every time I re-capture my work for later projects, for instance a new demo reel, I get drop out. Then I have to fix it, which is annoying.

So I decided I would start backing the files up to DVD. This way I could avoid drop out and the file transfer from DVD to my hard drive is much faster than the real-time capturing of tape.

    My questions are:
    1) Is it OK to create a .zip file so I can stuff more video onto the 4.7GB DVD? The process I take is: selecting the desired clips I want to zip > right click > Create Archive for “X” items.

    2) I just tried to zip two ProRes422 (HQ) files as a test and I got an error message saying “A file could not be created” Why is that?

    Thanks for any help.

You will not get very much file compression when attempting to compress compressed video, so there’s no good reason to do it.

In my experience tapes are much more reliable then burned DVD. But if you want to back up just the final file, hard drives are cheap. But remember to keep every thing on ether 2 separate drives, or on 2 a mirrored raid.
