  • Bullet Trail? Displacement map problem?

I recently saw a tutorial to create a bullet trail effect as seen in the Matrix and other films, using Trapcode Particular. I created the trail with Particular and precomposed it in After Effects, and precomposed my base footage too. I then applied the Displacement Map to my footage layer and selected the source to the Solid with Particular on it. For some reason, when I adjust the horizontal displacement or vertical, it moved my footage up and down instead of the Particular. What did I do wrong? Link to tutorial: https://youtu.be/RWvNV-Eewlk. Tut for effect starts around 8:50.

Effects that rely on other layers look at the raw layer data. It does not look at effects applied to that layer. What you have to do is precompose your layer with Particular and make sure you move all attributes into the new composition.

So basically take my solid that has the TrapCode Particular effect applied to it, precompose it and select move attributes into the new comp? Alright, I will get back to you once I have done that.

Wait a second…..I did move all attributes into the new composition…….now im really confused. Okay, here are the steps I took:

    1. 3D camera track footage
    2. Add bullets from cinema 4d
    3. Create new solid
    4. Apply particular and adjust jeyframes accordingly
    5. Precompose solid with particular (moved attributes into nee comp)
    6. Precomposed base footage (did not precompose the track data or c4d data) (moved attribute into new comp)
7 apply displacement map onto solid precomp

If you’ve got camera data, you’ll need to copy your camera into the precoomp too.

I’m so sorry, I just realized that yesterday after watching a different, but similar tutorial. But now itnlooks great, so thanks for your help!

\”Why, Mr. Anderson? Why, why, why? Why do you do it? Why get up? Why keep fighting? Do you believe you\’re fighting for something? For more than your survival? Can you tell me what it is? Do you even know? Is it freedom? Or truth? Perhaps peace? Could it be for love? Illusions, Mr. Anderson. Vagaries of perception. Temporary constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify an existence that is without meaning or purpose. And all of them as artificial as the Matrix itself, although only a human mind could invent something as insipid as love. You must be able to see it, Mr. Anderson. You must know it by now. You can\’t win. It\’s pointless to keep fighting. Why, Mr. Anderson? Why? Why do you persist?\”
