    Hi there people.

I was wondering how to achieve an effect like this without the use of 3D Tracking:

    https://www.videocopilot.net/blogstuff/bullet_hd.mov

As said in the comments, this effect was achieved without 3D Tracking. The only 3D Elements were the bullet and the shell.

So..is there a way to do this entirely in AE? Seems like it.

    But how?
    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance..

It seems like that may have been done without any ‘real’ camera moves at all, which would require much less work to match move as there is very little motion. I can’t be sure exactly of the technique used, but my guess would be something along the lines of:

    1) Shoot the footage and background plates.

    2) Stitch stabilized footage together with background plates in a ‘3D’ environment (AE would work for that, similar techniques have been used in War of the Worlds and Frankenstein).

    3) Create a static camera that matches the relative position and attributes of the real camera (taking measurements on set is important!)

    4) Animate the bullet/null/layer so that it exits the gun realistically from this angle.

    5) Animate the camera to follow the movement of the bullet.

    6) Check to make sure everything looks good, if not then return to step 4.

That’s the way I would try doing it anyway… As for the wake of the bullet, I had some very vague suggestions for a similar effect in this thread:
