    Hi ya’ll,

I’m in the process of building an FCP system from the ground up and I wanted to see what pieces of equipment are “must have” in your opinion[s]. I’m currently selecting what kind of graphics tablet, edit controller, third party aps, and plugins (FCp & After Effects) to purchase. Obviously this is such a vague question, but if you can chime in on one product that you absolutely can’t edit without, that’ll help me not forget something in my research. Thanks for your time.

First off, what computer will you be putting all of this in? New MacPro tower? Older G5 Quad….?

What format will you be editing in? HD, DVCPRO HD, HDV, SD, DVCAM, DV?

    Editing card: AJA KONA 3

    Hard drives:
For true HD and not just DVCPROHD, you’ll be purchasing something in the Fiber card range: Huge Systems, Medea, G-Speed (not sure it is shipping).

For regular 8-10bit and DVCPROHD, a 5-10 drive SATA raid would suffice.

    Plug-Ins:
For After Effects…depending on what computer you get, get the Nucleo Plug-in. ( https://www.gridironsoftware.com/ ) makes your rendering a whole lot quicker if you have a ram packed machine.

Just a little smattering of stuff. Search back in the archives as this comes up every few weeks and there are a ton of great posts on the subject.

    Air conditioning.
    BAttery backup on critical systems.
A really good buddy who understands Macintosh down to the kernel.
A long list of clients waiting to give you money.
    Good lighting in the suite.
    Good chair.
    Good coffee.
    Good training.
    Good sales staff.
    Vacation.

The question comes up every week around here and you’re probably posting this same question in other FCP forums. Search for dozens of similar threads.
