[Harm Millaard] “and use 8 Hitachi SATA300 disks in a Raid 5”

    Hello Harm

So are most you guys using this many drives building an external case with 8 individual SATA cables sticking out of a hole in the back of the PC? Surely 8 internals is asking for heating problems?

    Thanks again,

    Mark.

    Mark,

My experience with these server cases is that they do not cause heating problems, because they have lots of large fans built in and use good air ducts to direct the airflow as efficiently as possible. They are also very quiet.

I have a dual Xeon server here with 7 internal HD’s in a Raid5 that is cooler and quieter than my ThermalTake workstation with 6 internal HD’s.

    Hope this helps.

I look at it this way – buy a certified system and have it integrated by a Matroz AXIO reseller. For every day you aren’t messing around with hardware and tech support youll be editing and billing. If the thing doesn’t work, call the reseller and let them deal with it.

    Mark,

Just to let you know, the newest 750 GB Seagates using perpendicular storage have been tested as one of the fastest drives around, albeit not the quietest, coming in on some tests as even quicker than the WD Raptors. In a Raid6 configuration with 8 disks, this would give you a whopping 4.5 TB effective storage.
