This all looks pretty good. If budget is a concern, I would go with a smaller SSD. All you have on it is System and Programs. One of mine at work is a 60GB it’s about 2/3 full. I would add 2x2TB drives for storage. Both my editing systems are rock solid. I use ASUS boards and video cards.

I went with a 120 GB for $130 from Agility.

I see that many NVidia users have problems with Vegas 11.
Actually, I have ATI/AMD video card (with last _release_ not beta drivers) and Vegas crashes rarely in my case so I don’t disable GPU usage.

Also, look at this page. You’ll see that NVidia cards are better for rendering, bug ATI/AMD cards are better for playback. For me playback is more important as it allows me to have smooth preview while working with project. What about render? Well, I can render my project during nights. But right now I can’t use GPU with Mainconcept codec because of crashes during render (I hope it will be fixed in following builds). Also, some people say that encoding using CPU only gives better quality.

P.S. I know that Intel/AMD and NVidia/ATI something like a religion. I know that NVidia with CUDA could be used in other programs as well. I have ATI and NVidia cards in my home computers. Both are fine.

I based the video card on the recommendation of the videoguys.com. They recommended the GTX 550/570. I ended up getting the 560, though. I’ll cross my fingers.

You might want to put in a 2 or 3 drive raid for your playback files.

I have an 80gig SSD (C:) which is fast when reading, and not so fast when writing. Whenever possible, I install my applications on a normal harddrive (D:) to avoid filling up the SSD. Ditto with documents and other user files. The SSD is used mainly by Windows.

[Ken Mitchell] “You might want to put in a 2 or 3 drive raid for your playback files.”

Why? It won’t make any difference on the editing performance.

BRAD – Go for a 1KW power Supply. In the future you will likely add more internal hard disk drives and a second display card, and a 750Watt supply just may not be enough.

Why? Well of course a 3 drive/raid 5 would make a huge difference due to the fact that data loss due to drive failure would be minimized without reducing speed. We use them successfully all of the time.

As I said: “It won’t make any difference on the editing performance.”

In twelve years I have lost project data due to hard disk failures exactly – zero times.

I probably go through ten to twenty hard disks per year. Yes, I have had disk failures – just had one last week – but my projects are backed up daily.
