Building a NAS for multi-user video editing
Hello, all. I want to spec out for my employer a shared video storage solution for our production company. It would be used by at least three editors, each using a MacPro 2010/2012. Each has one slot available for a 10Gb NIC. We’re editing HD, with occasional UHD.
After scouring this and other sites for information, I have come up with the following:
NAS: QNAP TVS-h1688X 16-Bay
Switch: QNAP QSW-M1208-8C 10GbE Managed Switch
NICs: QNAP QXG-10G1T
HDDs: 12 x WD Red Pro 4TBIs this a sensible collection of hardware for what I want to do?
Is there any other hardware I’m missing (aside from Cat6a or Cat7 cables)?
The NAS has two 10Gb ports. Is there advantage to be had in connecting both to the switch?

Your TVS-h1688X needs two 480 Gig SSD drives to hold the ZFS operating system. You build this first. Then the RAID group, as a single thin provisioned RAID – RAID 6. I can’t believe you are using 4TB drives – such a waste – get bigger drives. You will regret only having 40TB of storage in this system. The QSW-M1208-8C is being held up for firmware updates, but this should be resolved within the next 2 weeks. It’s a great switch (it had some minor issues – and those are being fixed right now). You don’t need to LACP the 2 10G ports to the switch (you can for fun, but it’ won’t help you with this small system, and only 6 or 7 client computers). Use cheap Cat 6 cabling for up to 180′ (55 meters) for everything.
trust me on those drives – get bigger drives. Price out Seagate EXOS with larger drives – it will be the same price as you have on the WD RED Pro 4TB drives.

Yeah, in a way I kinda did get it from you, in that most of my searches eventually circled back to you. Sort of “Six Degrees of Bob Zelin”, as it were. All that QNAP gear seemed ideal.
I’ll check out those Seagate drives. I can do all the physical installation, but may I contact you offlist about our hiring you to set it up? Is that something you can do remotely?

Bob’s done a great job on our two setups. Done through Teamviewer, really knows his stuff.
