  • Bug for Surround Sound Audio??? Or is it just me that’s going crazy!?

So here’s my problem…When I’m working on a project with Surround Sound and set a certain option under “Pan Mode” like, for example, Dialogue, sometimes the settings do not retain after I close and reopen FCPX. I can’t seem to find a pattern and it happens randomly. On certain clips it will default back to None under the Pan Mode option. It’s very frustrating going back through each audio clip to verify that the clip settings have been retained.

Here’s a common workflow example. I’m working with some interviews and expand the component audio (Ctrl + Opt S). I only turn on the channel that I need, such as the audio from the Lav Mic and disable the audio from the camera. I will set the Pan Mode to Dialogue and modify some of the settings. I will close the component audio, and then place a Compressor on the clip to equal out the audio levels. Now, after doing this to about 15-20 clips, and then closing FCPX and reopening it, there are about 4-5 clips that default back to None and I have to go through and cherry pick to find them every time. But it seems like the same clips default back to None every time and I don’t know why. It’s driving me bonkers!

Anybody have an idea what the heck is going on here? Thanks so much for any insight!

p.s. I’m working with FCPX 10.0.7, but it also happened in 10.0.6. It seems to have started when the component audio feature was introduced.

    Hey Adam,

So I tried this on my end and had the same thing happen, one of the clips lost the pan mode. However I also found a way where it didn’t. Instead of expanding the component audio I left it collapsed. I turned off the unwanted tracks in the inspector for the clip that was on the timeline and then set the pan mode to dialogue. This seemed to fix the issue of the pan mode changing. It also has the added benefit of not having to expand the audio component to see the pan mode, just click on the clip and look at the inspector.

On a side note I discovered another issue while testing this. Once I set the pan mode to “Dialogue” I loose the ability to copy and paste attributes. Since I never work in surround I had never noticed this before.

    Hi Michael,

Yes I’ve tried that before, but then when I apply a Compressor, it seems to have no affect now. It used to work fine prior to 10.0.6 with the method you described. However, it seems the Compressor only works when I set the Pan Mode on the component side of the audio, rather than to the clip itself.
