  • Bug discovered, causing After Effects 2020 to crash

I have already filed a bug report, but I wanted to post here so that people who are experiencing crashing can understand why. I’ve spent many hours trying to figure out why older projects were crashing in After Effects 2020 when I would open certain comps. It turns out it’s the 3D Reference Axes.

If one or two of you have a minute, please try this yourself and confirm. Simply open any comp in 2020, make sure it has a camera layer, and then in the “Grid and Guide Options” in your Composition panel, turn on “3D Reference Axes”. I’ve tried it on both Mac and Windows, with the same result.

So if you have projects from earlier versions of After Effects that are crashing in AE 2020 when you open a comp, try this… open the project in CC 2019, turn off the 3D Reference Axes in every comp, save it, then open in 2020. However, if you’re like me and running Big Sur, then you’re out of luck, since CC 2019 is not compatible with Big Sur (don’t even get me started on that one).

Yup – just followed your steps and the same thing happened. Ouch – AE crashed hard.

Just heard from Adobe on this issue:

“This is already fixed in the current AE Beta release (and will be included in the next shipping release).”
