    Hey Everyone,

We’re in the middle of a re-organization and are moving to a PC laptop based environment. We’ve purchased two Sony XDCam HD cameras and have a budget for 4 laptop editors. I personally have a HP Pavilion dv7 with 4 processors and 8 gig running vista 64 ultimate and CS3. It’s been extremely stable with only 1 blue screen ever in over a year! It also has dual hard drives which adds a nice touch.

I’m hoping someone can point us in the direction of something current taking the requirements of CS5 into consideration. My understanding is the Mercury playback is currently only available for full video cards and not laptops. Is this correct? Will this be transitioned to laptops and therefore should we be aware of what video card is in the laptop we purchase? I don’t know what kind of connections we should be looking at but USB3 comes to mind.

I was also wondering about the Matrox DualHead2Go for a dual 24” monitor setup. Has anyone used these in a CS5 (or other) environment? What has been your experience?

If Todd Kopriva or anyone else with experience in this area could take a moment to give some guidance that would be greatly appreciated.

    Best Regards,
    Mike

There is a hack that can be used to use CUDA on mobile cards, same hack that is used for non-qualified, the thing is to have enough CUDA cores to make a difference, another drawback is having enough descreet video memory, newer laptops sometimes use shared memory to augment video memory and that steals memory from apps, also cooling for video chips in a laptop maynot be as great as it should be.
Here is a couple of articles on video card hacks for CS5, The first one lists a 285M as being used on a laptop, others have been used with various degrees of success.

Here is a listing of various chips mobile and desktop, you can clik on them and see what cores they use.
