BT-LH1700W
Posted by Jeff Carson on June 29, 2006 at 8:41 pmWow. Just got our Panasonic BT-LH1700W monitor (had an older 8″ Std Def Sony 8044Q before). Hooked up the component cable and were really stunned by the picture. We’ve used Varicam with this monitor, but were not sure what to expect from the HVX-200. VERY nice picture, right out of the box.

June 29, 2006 at 9:15 pmCongrats on your latest acquisition, Jeff.
The LH1700W is a good basic monitor if you’re working primarily (or soley) in 720p HD. For example, it’s processing electronics show their limitations especially when displaying interlaced SD.
For interlaced SD, your 8044Q CRT monitor (assuming it’s working properly) is more accurate in most respects. But for 720p, the LH1700W is currently a great value!
All the best,
– Peter

June 29, 2006 at 10:53 pmThanks Peter! Indeed. The SD interlaced stuff will soon be a thing of the past here in Kansas. And it cannot happen too soon. We really chose the Panny monitor for field use for many reasons. The built in waveform, the DC power capability AND the connectability advantages over the Cinema Display/AJA converter path (klugey at best). Also, a very sexy simple look with the Hoodman on and the special mount to a short C-stand for client viewing. Though image quality issues might be seen by those with the most critical eyes, our clients are absolutely going to LOVE this tool.

Yes, we love ours. if you think it looks good connected to the HVX-200 through component, you should see what it looks like connected to the editing system through SDI… even better.
We use it for SD work as well. We replaced our Sony 20″ with the 1700 and have no misgivings. I concur with your thoughts… we’re shooting almost everything in HD, unless someone specifically requests SD…
