BruPE tape corruption scenarios
Back in the day we used the Quantum LTO-3A drive. During a backup session if the device decided it need a head cleaning or some other interruption occurred, the backup session in-progress would be corrupted and the physical tape wold become unusable resulting in all previously written data being lost.
So now we’re using Bru PE and a conventional LTO-5 drive. We archive several hundred GB of data from the server to the tape and then delete the data from the server after the successful archive session. Later, we append another several hundred GB to the tape, and so on until it is full and another tape is requested and added to the tape set.
What I’m concerned about is what if, during the course of an archive session where we are appending data, the session is interrupted, say by a power outage or the drive requesting a cleaning etc. Is it possible that the tape could become corrupt and previously written data be lost or the catalog corrupted??
Our past experience with the LTO-3A device has us pretty paranoid.
Any insight from experienced Bru PE users or Tolis rep’s appreciated
Best!!
