  • Browser keyboard shortcuts?!

Posted by Drew Lahat on June 25, 2009 at 4:32 am

The first thing I do when I start using an NLE is learning its keyboard shortcuts – ideally what takes your time editing is the thought process, not the software. I’m well aware of the Button List and keyboard customization, however:

    1. When logging items in the browser, I can’t figure out how to move from the Name column to all the others. The arrow keys work within the Name column, but I want to move to the clip’s logging fields to start entering info. A reasonable request, isn’t it?

    2. Tab will move forward through the logging columns, but nothing moves backward?? I even mapped Back Tab, to no avail.

    3. Cmd+1-6 are handy, but there’s also a shortcut that lets you toggle or cycle through ANY open window or pane inside FCP. Something with ~, Tab or Esc. I found it twice and forgot it twice, and it drives me nuts. Anyone?

Hopefully these are silly questions with easy answers.

    3. Cmd-Shift- [ and ] will move between tabs in a window.

You did go to Feedback and enter the requests, right?

    All the best,

    3. That one I know; the shortcut I’m referring to cycles between windows, not tabs in a window. (Or are windows of the same application called panes?)

    Re entering requests: I will.

Just wondering if it’s one of these “seems fundamental to me but to no one else” things.
To put it differently, if Microsoft announced tomorrow that they decided to remove arrow-key navigation in Excel spreadsheets, would I be the only one to care? Or, why are these shortcuts any less necessary than F9 & F10 for Overwrite and Insert?

If it’s something that hasn’t really mattered to a million FCP users over 6 versions, there must be something wrong about my workflow or approach.

(PS: Just found out about Imagine Products’ P2 Log Pro, which may offer a better logging interface. Maybe down the road that will be worth the investment.)

I totally agree. The lack of short cuts in the Final Cut browser is embarrasing. I’ve googled a lot on this (actually that’s how I found this post 🙂 ) but haven’t found anything yet …

I do a lot of assistant editing and running through a bin and setting in-points for syncing goes really fast. Adding metadata (scene, slate, take and logging notes) does not. It’s really annoying. 🙁

Most of the work I do is part of RAW-format workflows so I rarely use the logging window, I just drag and drop – and this workflow must be getting more and more common.

There are shortcuts for the windows.

    Cmd-1 is the Viewer
    Cmd-2 the Canvas
    Cmd-3 the Timeline
    Cmd-4 the Browser
    Cmd-5 the Effects tab

When you’re in the Viewer, Timeline, or Canvas, the Q key will toggle between the Viewer and the Canvas.

    All the best,

    Tom

Create a keyboard shortcut for the logging pane. I use Cmd-Shift-L. The tab key will move between the addressable fields.

Patrik, thanks for the kind words; I’m glad to see I’m not the only crazy one 🙂

    3. I (re-found) one shortcut I was looking for: Cmd + ~ (tilde) and Cmd + Shift + ~ will cycle through ANY open window in FCP (and most other Mac apps). If you like having multiple browser windows open, this is the only keyboard shortcut that will take you between them (correct me if I’m wrong). You might find it useful in other cases too.

Tom, what do you mean by “create a keyboard shortcut for the logging pane”? How do you do that, or how is it different than Cmd+4?

I also saw something called “logging column layout” (Opt+B). It does nothing for me, do you know what it is?

This is the only post I could find on the “back tab” function so I’m responding even though the thread is quite old.

I’m using FCP 7 and can not get back tab to work. I’ve tried mapping it to various keys, trashing/making new settings, nothing works. Back tab should allow me to move backwards in data entry columns in bins, right? Does this work for anyone?

    Thanks,
    Abbi
